- Between 1930 and 1970, many Western countries launched campaigns against comic books due to concerning their effects on children and young people. Australia was a prominent example, anti-Americanism combining, cultural nationalism, and protection of local artists. Authorities associated comics with educational problems, violence, crime, sexuality, and psychological disorders. Federal and state authorities introduced restrictions on their import, production, distribution, and circulation, including censorship measures. The Australian case represents a serious restriction of freedom of expression carried out in the name of protecting children and young people.
